A travel guide to Vancouver and Whistler: where to eat, sip, and relax.

Must-try restaurants, interesting spots in Vancouver, and a short trip to Whistler.

Vancouver

It's never too late to tell you about my winter trip to Canada. Starting now, you will have plenty of time to prepare for a winter trip.

As a person who was born in the winter months in the city and loves snow, there is a reason why I desperately need it during the Christmas holidays. Living in Los Angeles is great, but sometimes I want to escape to a snowy wonderland. And fill my heart with winter vibes: drink hot cocoa, catch the snow with my hands, make a snow angel, and eat surrounded by holiday decor.

In December 2024, I traveled to British Columbia and spent some time in Vancouver and Whistler.

Before my trip, I knew little about Vancouver. It's a popular filming location, has many scenic views, and is only a two-hour drive from Vancouver to Whistler. Also, Canada is the second place in the world where you could try an Ice wine (the rare and expensive dessert wine made from handpicked grapes and pressed while frozen).

After buying a flight ticket, I researched what I could do and where to eat. And you know what? I was surprised to find many high-end restaurants, including Michelin stars, and various cuisines, especially authentic Asian: Japanese and Chinese. I booked a few great places, which I want to share with you today.

iDen & QuanJuDe Beijing Duck House

Do you remember all those funny moments in movies about families who mess up their Christmas food at the last minute and decide to go to a Chinese restaurant because everything else is closed? Well... I had never eaten Chinese food on Christmas Eve, but the idea kept popping into my mind. Why not?

I checked numerous Chinese places and found the perfect one for a holiday dinner - iDen & QuanJuDe Beijing Duck House.

The restaurant's story starts in 1864 in Beijing, China. Originally served only to China’s imperial family, Quanjude later opened to the public and expanded worldwide. The Vancouver location opened in 2019 and earned a Michelin star in 2022.

The restaurant's space is modern and minimalistic, with large windows and an open area. It has art pieces, dragon-embroidered pillows, and a wooden wall with Chinese symbols.

iDen & QuanJuDe is best known for its perfectly crispy, juicy duck. The secret? Traditional techniques that control every step of preparation and cooking result in tender, juicy meat with thin, crispy skin. Guess what I want to eat?)

Interesting fact: Quanjude has served its famous roast duck to world leaders and celebrities, including U.S. presidents and British royalty. Since its founding in 1864, it has been a symbol of Chinese culinary heritage, with a recipe that has remained unchanged for over 150 years.

The menu is easy to navigate, offering a la carte dishes and a tasting menu. I got a few items from the regular menu because I prioritized trying a Quanjude Signature Premium Caviar Beijing Duck (it takes around 55 Minutes to cook) Images 1,3,4. When it is ready, the server carves it tableside. You get to watch the whole process, which is fun.

I'm glad I didn't overeat before the duck because it’s incredibly nutritious. While waiting, I enjoyed a few appetizers:

  • Malantou & Dried Tofu Salad in a Spring Roll Wrapper

  • Golden Crispy Coconut Prawn Balls with Oat Crust

  • Crab Butter, Lobster, Black Pork & Sea Urchin Wonton (Image 2)

The drinks menu is also worth your attention. It offers a great selection of cocktails, Chinese tea, wine, etc. I tried the Snow White cocktail (sake with lychee liqueur), which was light, fresh, and delicious.

As a dessert, Mango pomelo sago has a pudding consistency and vibrant mango flavor (Image 5). It was a perfect ending with a cup of Chinese tea and Ice wine.

Overall, I had a fantastic experience watching the duck being carved, trying unique flavors, and discovering how well ice wine pairs with Peking duck. If you’re in Vancouver and love exceptional food, iDen & QuanJuDe is worth a visit. Just make sure to come hungry!

Hawksworth

I chose this Restaurant for one main reason: the chef. David Hawksworth is one of Canada’s most acclaimed culinary talents, with experience in Michelin-starred kitchens and a passion for modern Canadian cuisine. When I saw Hawksworth in the Michelin Guide, it was an easy decision.

Located inside the historic Rosewood Hotel Georgia, one of Vancouver’s most iconic luxury hotels, the restaurant has a prime downtown location. When you step into Hawksworth, you’re wrapped in an atmosphere of classic and modern design. The soft lighting, elegant decor, crisp white tablecloths, and artwork create a sophisticated and inviting space.

Hawksworth serves Pacific Northwest cuisine, turning fresh, local ingredients into beautifully crafted dishes. The menu changes with the seasons, so you always get the freshest flavors, whether it’s seafood straight from the Pacific, farm-to-table veggies, or rich, flavorful meats.

At Hawksworth, you can experience dinner differently: a tasting menu or a la carte. The Taste of Hawksworth offers a four-course dinner for CA$ 75, featuring a selection of its best dishes.

Some delicious items to try:

  • Grilled wagyu skewer, pickled serrano chili, toasted sesame (Image 1)

  • Foie gras terrine, grape jam, toasted brioche (Image 1)

  • Fremantle octopus, potato, red pepper, focaccia (Image 4)

  • Slow braised lamb shank, polenta, lemon gremolata (Image 2)

Deserts are fantastic. I didn't expect it to have such a beautiful presentation and flavour combination. A Pavlova (with bourbon, maple, and ice cream) resembles a mushroom (Image 3). Isn't it cute? The 70% Dark Valrhona Chocolate mousse (sponge cake, caramel, pecan, and ice cream) melts in the mouth (Image 5).

Hawksworth is a modern Canadian fine dining restaurant offering artfully crafted dishes highlighting local, seasonal ingredients with global influences. Its stylish ambiance, impeccable service, and award-winning cuisine make it a must-visit for an unforgettable gastronomic experience.

Carlino

Carlino is a cozy restaurant inside the Shangri-La Hotel. It serves Northern Italian food, focusing on the rich cuisine of the Friuli region. Every dish on the menu has high-quality local ingredients, keeping things fresh and seasonal. That’s why it’s a Michelin Guide-recommended place for great Italian food in Vancouver.

Carlinos's interior perfectly balances elegance and warmth. The earthy tones, wooden accents, and comfy seating create a cozy atmosphere. The large windows let in a lot of sunlight, giving the space an airy, relaxed feel.

In the evening, the atmosphere turns incredibly romantic, with soft lighting, candles on every table, and a charming vibe that invites you to slow down, sip a glass of wine or a beautifully crafted cocktail, and enjoy the moment with your better half.

What makes this spot unique? Mostly, the handmade pasta! And the menu that blends traditions and creativity. For example, you can try Cjarsons, a staffed pasta dish with sweet and savory fillings.

The menu features various salads, main dishes, and Italian appetizers, such as carpaccio, prosciutto, and bruschetta. It also has classic desserts like cannoli, tiramisu (Image 4), and panna cotta, making it the perfect spot to end your evening on a sweet note.

Then, there’s the FAI TU tasting menu (СA$89 per person), a family-style experience where the chef picks a selection of dishes for you. It is the best way to explore the menu and get a real feel for what Carlino is about.

Some delicious items to try:

  • Scallops in a shell (Capesante Gratinate) (Image 1)

  • Squid ink pasta with lobster (Image 2)

  • Carpaccio di Manzo

  • Saffron risotto with beef cheeks (Image 3)

Carlino also serves daily breakfast until 11 AM, with omelets (truffle or French-style), Benedicts (bacon, salmon, or crab), toasts, and waffles. If you’re staying at the Shangri-La Hotel, breakfast is included, so you can start your morning with a meal before heading out to explore the city.

Carlino in Vancouver brings the warmth of Northern Italian cuisine to the city, focusing on rich flavors, handmade pastas, and locally sourced ingredients. A cozy atmosphere with an excellent wine selection makes it a perfect spot for an intimate and authentic Italian dining experience.

Per Se Social Corner

A Michelin Guide recommends it as a perfect place for a casual brunch with a location in Yaletown. I decided to see if it was true.

Per Se Social Corner effortlessly blends Italian and Spanish flavors into a vibrant dining experience. If you love a mix of Italian and Spanish influences, this must be on your list.

The ambiance is modern and warm, with stylish decor, beautiful lighting, and a lively atmosphere. One detail I love the most is the lighting design. Swirling lighting resembles a cup with a saucer, adding a unique touch. The small lamps on the bar tables create a soft glow, making it the perfect spot for a quiet coffee and a good book or an intimate date over cocktails.

Even during the day, the space has a relaxed, inviting vibe, ideal for sharing small plates and enjoying the moment.

The menu is great, by the way. Authentic Spanish paella, pizzas, small tapas plates, and handmade pasta make this place a dream for anyone who loves rich, well-balanced flavors.

Some delicious items to try:

  • Hummus with flatbread (Image 1)

  • Beets and burrata ((Image 3)

  • Lobster and crab ravioli (Image 4)

  • Lamb racks with risotto (Image 2)

Per Se Social Corner in Vancouver offers handcrafted pastas, pizzas, tapas, and expertly prepared seafood in a stylish, lively setting. With a vibrant atmosphere, craft cocktails, and a well-curated wine list, it’s an excellent spot for casual gatherings and special occasions.

Christmas Market  🎄❄️

The Vancouver Christmas Market is pure holiday magic! Cozy wooden huts with handcrafted ornaments, unique gifts, and festive treats instantly get you into the Christmas spirit. What could be better than a place that feels like a holiday dream?

Ride the vintage carousel, walk through the giant Christmas tree, and soak in the festive vibes. Grab a hot chocolate or mulled wine, listen to live holiday music, and find the perfect gifts for your friends (or a little something for yourself). Because why not?

One of the best parts of the Vancouver Christmas Market is the food. A delicious mix of traditional European flavours, including kebab, sizzling bratwursts, schnitzels, gulasch, spätzle, and more. And let's not forget the sweet treats, like freshly baked cookies, strudel, cakes, and Belgian waffles.

There’s mulled wine, hot chocolate, and warm apple cider to warm up.

While walking through the market, I saw people with these giant, crispy, fried spiral potatoes on a stick. And you know what? I had to try one. It’s called a Tornado Potato! The stall offers freshly cut potatoes, yams, zucchini, and even poutine with different seasonings like herbs, onion, or cheese. Crispy, flavorful, and totally worth it to try!

Seaplanes Harbour

Good to Know

Harbour Air Seaplanes terminal is just steps away from the Vancouver Christmas Market, making it possible to combine both experiences in one visit.

Seaplanes, which take off and land directly on water, offer a unique way to see the city. From the short 20-minute scenic flight over downtown Vancouver to a more extended getaway to the Gulf Islands, Whistler, or Victoria.

The Vancouver Christmas Market typically runs from November 13 to December 24. For exact dates, operating hours, and ticket details for the 2025 season, be sure to check the official website

Where to go in Vancouver

Vancouver is incredibly charming, and I wish I had more time to explore it. I couldn't see everything in the city, but I made the most of it! If you’re short on time, here’s a list of must-visit spots perfect for a 2-3 day trip.

Vancouver Public Library

This stunning architectural landmark, inspired by the Colosseum, features beautiful reading spaces, an expansive rooftop garden, and a vast collection of books.

Vancouver Lookout

Vancouver Lookout, located 168 meters above downtown, offers breathtaking 360° panoramic views of the city, mountains, and ocean.

Gastown

The oldest area has cobblestone streets, Victorian architecture, and the iconic Steam Clock. It blends historic charm with trendy shops, restaurants, and lively nightlife.

Georgia and Robson Streets

Vancouver’s ultimate shopping and dining streets. Packed with everything from high-end fashion brands to unique local boutiques. It also has a rich history.

Flyover Canada

This immersive flight simulation takes you on a breathtaking aerial journey across the country’s landscapes. If you love epic views, this is a must-do in Vancouver!

Seawall Water Walk

Vancouver’s most scenic stroll stretches along the coastline with stunning views of the ocean, mountains, and city skyline.

After exploring Vancouver’s incredible dining scene and interesting places, it’s time for a little adventure. And what better way to escape the city for a day than with a trip to Whistler?

Whistler

Just a 2-hour drive from Vancouver, along the stunning Sea-to-Sky Highway, Whistler is a popular destination for those craving breathtaking views, outdoor activities, and comfort food.

I had an idea about the Whistler trip a few years ago, and finally, my wish came true. This mountain town is famous for epic skiing, breathtaking views, and a village that’s always buzzing with energy. There are different restaurants, cafés, boutiques, souvenir shops, and the best après-ski spots to warm up after a day outside.

Beyond skiing and snowboarding, there’s a massive lineup of other winter activities: winter hiking, snowmobiling, ice skating (Whistler Olympic Plaza), tubing, peak 2 peak gondola, and spa…

P.S. One of my most significant memories from here is catching the snow while drinking cocoa by a firepit with a snowy view.

Braidwood Tavern

Braidwood Tavern is the perfect mix of a ski lodge and a modern gastropub inside the Four Seasons Resort Whistler. With fireplace-lit corners, rustic wood interiors, and Christmas tree views, it’s a spot where you can relax and enjoy the moment.

I visited Braidwood Tavern on Christmas Day, and let me tell you, it was awesome. They had a buffet menu with everything you could imagine, and you could eat as much as you wanted for two hours (yes, it was time-limited, but it was enough). From roast meats and seafood to endless sides and festive desserts, it was the ultimate holiday experience.

What surprised me the most?
The installation of gingerbread houses! An entire display of beautifully crafted gingerbread creations, along with a dessert selection for every taste (Image 5).

Oh, and let’s talk about the drinks. Their hot chocolate with Baileys and mini marshmallows was exactly what you’d want on a snowy winter night (Image 2). Overall, the Christmas cocktails made the whole experience even more festive.

Outside the holiday menu, Braidwood serves elevated comfort food, mixing classic favorites with creative twists: classic dishes, fresh seafood, and vegan options.

Honestly, just writing this makes me want to go back. If you’re in Whistler, don’t miss it.

This trip was everything I wanted: a snow-covered landscape, scenic views, incredible food, and unforgettable experiences. The cozy mountain vibes of Whistler, where I tried festive treats at Braidwood Tavern, and the vibrant energy of Vancouver, where I explored world-class restaurants and hidden gems. Every moment felt like a perfect winter escape.

What made it even better? The contrast. One day, I was sipping hot chocolate by the fireplace after a day in the snow, and the next, I was enjoying fine dining with city lights in the background. The best of both worlds.

If you love a mix of adventure, great food, and a little luxury, a Whistler & Vancouver combo trip should be on your list. Would I do it again? Absolutely.

Until next time, Canada! 🇨🇦
